Cyberbullying and the Wild Wild Web
Too many books on cyberbullying focus on the technical of legal consequences of cyberbullying. Hitchcock reminds us that there are real people behind every story and how the events affected them. Her book, Cyberbullying and the Wild Wild Web, tells us of some of the names that those of us in the field are all too aware of and names that many people do not know. The stories, as unique as the people that are involved, share a common theme (cyberbullying) and too often, a tragic end.
But Hitchcock goes beyond the tragic stories that people may have heard about in the news. After all, the media often follows the, “If it bleeds, it leads,” philosophy. She shares several stories of hope, where those who were attacked online fought back successfully. She shares stories of friends who came to the rescue for victims, often the difference between life and death in cyberbullying cases.
She shares stories that can help teach others not to fall for scams and deliberate, detailed cases of cyberbullying that originated on e-Bay of all places. She shares valuable insight from others like herself, who are trying to help people protect themselves and their loved ones.
Cyberbullying and the Wild Wild Web is a valuable resource for parents and educators alike. The last two chapters of the book are dedicated to providing tips and additional resources to help everyone avoid cyberbullying issues. I highly recommend it!
About the Author
Joe Yeager is the founder of Safety Net of PA, LLC and has been a cyber safety advocate for several years. He is an adjunct professor at Philadelphia University, where has been teaching several classes that involve using technology to improve the quality of their schoolwork.
As the founder of Safety Net, Joe provides a variety of presentations on improving the online experience, both in better educational performance and in cyber safety. It was after his own daughter came across inappropriate content online that got him involved in helping others in the area.
His work on cyber safety has been published by the Family Online Safety Institute, the Social Media Club, Calkins Media and more. He is also the author of #DigitalParenting- A Parent's Guide to Social Media, Cyberbullying &Online Activity, which was chosen as an Editor’s Pick in April 2016.
